GRUBS

White grubs are one of the most damaging of all lawn insects. In Nebraska, they are mainly the larvae of masked chafer and june beetles. Generally, eggs are laid in late July by the beetles, then hatch in early August. The emerging grubs feed on grass roots, and damage can be identified as brown areas that pull up easily. If left untreated, white grubs can spread quickly and destroy large areas of a lawn. They are creamy white in color with a brown head and a C-shaped body. For best protection, Merit insecticide should be applied in June or July in advance of hatching grubs.

SOD WEBWORM

Sod webworms are another damaging lawn insect. They are the larvae of sod webworm moths. They emerge during April and May and feed on grass plants just above the surface. Early signs of damage include pale green patches in the lawn or areas that have refused to green-up during the spring. If left untreated, the areas of grass will turn brown and in severe cases the grass will die. Sod webworms are about 1/2-3/4 inch long, greyish-brown with small dark spots, and have a brown head. For best protection, apply a general lawn insecticide if they are detected.
